Newbury to Kintbury

5.5 miles, 7 locks and 1 swingbridge.

After some shopping and general having a nice time in Newbury, we set off at lunchtime. It was hot and the new sun-top was on. There was a lock every three quarters of a mile or so. After the first couple we teamed up with Foxtrot and her liveaboard owner.

Foxtrot and Harold share a lock.
As we left Newbury,  the landscape became more rural and prettier.

The locks were easier too, with ground paddles rather than the vicious gate paddles of further up. Copse lock was particularly nice, shaded by tall trees to the south.

At Dreweat's lock we met the horse-drawn trip-boat coming the other way. The boat and its trippers waited at the top while we went up and the horse had a well-earned nibble at the lock-edge grass.

We were heading for Kintbury, but as this canal has a woeful lack of nice mooring places, so was everyone else. However, we did find a spot slightly further out than we would have liked. These houses made up our view, and of course they had handsome Harold to look out at!

We have booked a table at the Dundas Arms for dinner tonight. We might stay here for a couple of days as its a nice place for a birthday visit at the weekend.
