tadpole Bridge

9 miles and 5 locks.

A grey drizzly start. We found the butchers in Lechlade and bought a few supplies. We tried breakfast at The Riverside but it was pretty dire. The rain cleared, although the cloud did not,  and we set off back East. The river was very quiet. We only met one other boat coming the other way and that was nb Safina, our acquaintances of Wallingford. Hasty greetings were exchanged as we passed each other. The sharp bends were a bit more challenging as we go in the direction of the flow but all were safely navigated.

We saw a buzzard sitting on the bank, a young one probably but large and very beautiful. We saw a kingfisher sitting on a tree branch over the river and it stayed put so we got a really good look. It dived right by the stern as we went past and caught a fish, flying off down the river with it. It was a lovely thing to see so close up. There were loads of butterflies everywhere and at Grafton lock there were young housemartins on the lockhouse roof being fed by their parents. It looked like they had just emerged from the nests beneath the eaves.

Eventually we arrived at Tadpole bridge and moored behind Black Bart (last seen in Oxford) in the gardens of The Trout.
